Through his work, Figueroa García reflects the cultural richness of his upbringing, blending indigenous heritage with contemporary techniques, creating pieces that are as deeply rooted in Mexico’s traditions as they are visually compelling in the global art scene.
Luis Oscar Figueroa García (b. 1976, Mérida, Yucatán)
Luis Oscar Figueroa García, born in Mérida, Yucatán, draws deeply from his roots in southern and central Mexico, where his early experiences with indigenous and pre-Hispanic cultures, particularly the Maya, shaped his artistic vision. His journey across diverse regions of the country, from the Mayan territories of Yucatán to the Nahuatl regions in the mountains of Puebla, profoundly influenced his creative direction.
As the son of a nomadic family, Figueroa García was constantly exposed to a variety of indigenous traditions and artistic expressions, which fostered his deep fascination with color, form, and folklore. His time spent in Guerrero, a state rich in indigenous and artisanal traditions, introduced him to the vibrant characters of Mexican culture, such as the tigers, tlacololeros, and chinelos, whose vivid colors and symbolism continue to inspire his work.
Figueroa García graduated from the Faculty of Visual Arts at the University of Guadalajara, where he honed his skills in drawing and acrylic painting, later expanding his practice into audiovisual arts. His work has been exhibited throughout Mexico, including in Guadalajara, Monterrey, Morelia, León, Aguascalientes, and Puerto Vallarta, as well as internationally in Los Angeles, Hamburg, Barcelona, and Paris.
