About the Artist
Alejandro Medina Gómez (b. 1997, Guadalajara, Mexico) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Guadalajara, Mexico. AMG's practice revolves around the creation of narratives that assemble symbols humanity has employed throughout history. Using a vibrant and contrasting color palette, AMG transforms color into a character within each composition, adding emotional depth and complexity. His influences range from diverse art movements to the social dynamics of urban and rural environments, with a particular focus on the cultural richness of Guadalajara and nearby communities. Through his work, AMG creates thought-provoking, layered pieces that explore both personal experiences and universal themes.
Exhibition Overview
"Symbols in Flux" presents eleven of AMG's latest works, each vividly capturing contemporary themes through his signature blend of symbolism, vivid color, and poignant irony. This series examines topics ranging from modern communication to social rituals and human behavior, connecting the viewer with the artist's personal reflections and broader cultural observations.
Highlighted works include:
- "Historia de Miriam con stickers" (History of Miriam with Stickers) – A portrait dedicated to a significant person in the artist's life, this piece reflects on the nature of communication in the digital age. Modern symbols are brought to the forefront as essential markers of contemporary identity.
- "Célula animal y dos bovinos disfrutando II" (Animal Cell and Two Cows Enjoying II) – This striking canvas offers a satirical view of different life forms, all coexisting in dynamic and contrasting ways. Vibrant colors contrast with discordant elements, reflecting the chaotic diversity of existence.
- "Autorretrato con luz verde" (Self-Portrait with Green Light) – A self-portrait capturing the artist in a moment of personal stress. The intense color palette conveys the weight of psychological strain, rendered with an expressive and intimate style.
- "Feliz cumpleaños en la ruta" (Happy Birthday on the Road) – This ink-on-paper work evokes the realization of a birthday as just another day less in one's life. Its stark imagery challenges the superficiality of celebrations, presenting a deeper, more introspective narrative.
- "Marilyn y Warhol" (Marilyn and Warhol) – A reflection on the phenomenon of fame, this painting explores how an artwork can eclipse its creator, addressing the tension between artist and icon, and the unexpected paths to artistic immortality.
- "Historias de ayer y hoy" (Stories of Yesterday and Today) – Rich with cultural references, this oil painting juxtaposes Mictlantecuhtli and Tlaloc with pop culture figures and dinosaurs, exploring how each era influences the next, forming a collective consciousness. This work was honored with a special mention at the XLIII Encuentro Nacional de Arte Joven in Aguascalientes.
- "Humo" (Smoke) – Representing the fleeting nature of special moments, this piece portrays warmth—whether of home, passion, or fleeting experiences—as it dissipates into memory.
- "Clásico tropezón con tripas" (Classic Gut-Wrenching Trip-Up) – In this acrylic-on-canvas painting, AMG captures the impulsive decisions we often make without reflection. The imagery, full of motion, embodies the artist’s introspective take on the complexities of decision-making.
- "Tlaloc echando firma en domingo de bajón" (Tlaloc Signing Off on a Sunday Slump) – This humorous composition blends two symbols: Tlaloc, the god of rain, and Calvin (from "Calvin and Hobbes"), in his iconic pose. The resulting image portrays a playful, mythological take on how storms are made.
- "Propongo un brindis III" (I Propose a Toast III) – A vibrant depiction of nightlife, this work explores the absurdity of social drinking and the superficial pleasures of late nights. The exaggerated colors suggest infrared vision, amplifying the experience of excess and indulgence.
- "Aquellas primeras paleteadas" (Those First Licks) – This piece represents the transient nature of friendships and substances experienced over a lifetime, inviting viewers to reflect on the shifting landscape of relationships and shared experiences.
Artist’s Vision
Through "Symbols in Flux," Alejandro Medina Gómez invites viewers into a richly colored, symbol-laden world that blends the ancient and the modern. His works encourage contemplation of both personal and collective histories, exploring how traditional symbols and contemporary experiences shape our understanding of the present. Through humor, critique, and nostalgia, AMG’s work provides a nuanced exploration of cultural identity, connection, and the influence of symbols in our daily lives.
